The black panther is actually a leopard or jaguar with excess black pigmentation that hides its markings. It's called melanism. With the right light you can distinguish the black spots on its coat. In this case, it is a jaguar from the Amazon rainforest. Its population has been seriously diminished in the last decades, and currently only about 63,000 would be left in the wild.
