Darling is a character from Jean Genet’s poetic novel Our Lady of the Flowers, a love interest of the daring drag queen Divine. Genet wrote the novel while serving his sentence at Paris’s Prison de la Santé. It was confiscated and destroyed by the guards, prompting him to recreate the book from memory.
