This photo is from an earlier photo series called “Story of Suzhou City,” photographed in Puyuan garden in Suzhou and it is inspired by “the peony pavilion” Kunqu, a story about the ethics of love told in Kunqu, the local opera in Suzhou area. It is envisioned that in the ancient gardens and mansions, where there were large families where the masters have man concubines, anything could happen. The gardens we see now are only the shell. Behind the wall, a young man and woman are having a private meeting, and a maid walks by and sees it, both carefully and surprised. The apples are symbols for the forbidden fruit, scattered all over the ground. The scene captures the most dramatic moment.
