Laurie is a self-taught editorial, portrait and fine art photographer from New England who began her career as a small town newspaper photographer. She has been working on her current portrait series, Through the Ice, documenting fellow cold water immersion enthusiasts since 2022.
Laurie's portraits highlight the contrast between the tranquility of her female subjects and the harsh, seemingly unendurable environment they are in. It is the treacherous surroundings that reveal the subjects great strength and endurance. The portrayal in popular culture of women as beautiful, vulnerable and delicate is just as much about the environment we imagine to be appropriate for a women- soft and pleasant and gentle- as the image of the subject herself.
Laurie's work has been exhibited in galleries in Athens, Crete, Boston, Johnson City, Texas, Boston, Winchester, Massachusetts and her home town of Marblehead. She lives in the historic seaside town of Marblehead north of Boston with her husband and two teenage sons, and swims in the ocean several times a week all year round.
